ENDESA hires Portuguese company to dismantle historic coal-fired power plant

Endesa awarded the Portuguese company Recifemetal, part of the Ambigroup group, the work to dismantle the historic coal-fired power station of Compostilla, in Northern Spain, a thermoelectric plant that began operating in the 1950s and which stopped producing this year.

The work will take place over four years and will provide employment for 130 people, most of whom will come from the region where the plant is located. Endesa's objective is to separate and reuse part of the waste from the almost 267 thousand tons of equipment. The Spanish group will incur a total expense of 62 million euros to close, dismantle and clean the site where the Compostilla plant produced electricity from coal for decades.

"As part of Endesa's circular economy commitment, it is planned to reuse concrete waste, using crushing equipment with the capacity to treat 300 tons per hour", says Endesa in a statement.

The Compostilla plant was inaugurated in the 1950s and expanded in the 1960s. It has a capacity of 1361 megawatts (MW), in five generating sets, being slightly more powerful than the largest existing plant in Portugal, the Sines coal-fired thermoelectric plant.
