Simultaneous demolition of the two cooling towers and the old chimney of Group 3, of the Compostilla Thermal Power Plant

On 08/31/2023, Recifemetal España/Ambigroup successfully carried out the simultaneous demolition of the two cooling towers and the old chimney of the Group 3, of the Compostilla Thermal Power Station, completing another of the stages related to the dismantling and demolition project of that Endesa Power Station.

In a joint operation between Endesa, Ambigroup, 4D and Perforaciones Noroeste, the demolition was carried out using explosives, making it necessary to define and implement strict procedures, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of people and goods in all phases of the process.

The two cooling towers built in reinforced concrete, with their hyperbolic configuration, were identical in their constructive and geometric characteristics: 110 meters high, 83 meters in diameter at the base and 50 meters in diameter at the crown. The Group 3 chimney, also made of concrete, was 120 meters high, 10 meters in diameter at the base and 6,5 meters in diameter at the top.

In total, around 224 kg of explosives were used. The waste produced in the operation (mostly concrete) will be processed and recovered on site, after separating the iron from the reinforcement.
